Accel, Bharat Innovation Fund And Premji Invest Back Biotech Startup
Biotech startup Zumutor Biologics has raised $7.3 million in a Pre-Series B funding round led by existing investors Accel and Bharat Innovation Fund.
The round also witnessed participation from new investors Premji Invest, Ashish Kacholia and Raj Dandu Family Office.
The latest funding comes as global investor interest in biotechnology and cancer-focused therapeutics continues to grow, particularly in companies developing innovative immunotherapy solutions.
Capital To Support Clinical Development Of Lead Drug Candidate
According to the company, the fresh capital will primarily be used to complete the ongoing US FDA Phase 1 clinical trial of its lead drug candidate, ZM008.
The funding will also support Phase 1B expansion cohorts and help initiate global Phase 2 studies, including clinical trials in India.
Founded by Kavitha Iyer Rodrigues, Zumutor Biologics focuses on developing immuno-oncology therapies that leverage the body’s innate immune system to fight cancer.
The company is among a growing group of Indian biotechnology startups working on advanced cancer therapies designed for global markets.
ZM008 Targets Hard-To-Treat Cancers
Zumutor’s lead program, ZM008, is a first-in-class Natural Killer (NK) cell checkpoint therapy designed to strengthen the immune system’s ability to identify and eliminate cancer cells.
Unlike traditional cancer treatments, immuno-oncology therapies aim to activate and enhance the body’s natural immune response against tumours.
The company said it has observed encouraging early clinical signals from ongoing Phase 1 trials in selected hard-to-treat tumour types.
These early findings have strengthened confidence in the platform’s potential as a next-generation cancer treatment approach.
Industry experts believe NK cell-based therapies represent one of the most promising areas within immuno-oncology as researchers seek new ways to improve treatment outcomes across multiple cancer indications.
Global Expansion Plans Underway
Zumutor said the latest funding will also support combination studies involving ZM008 across various cancer types as it expands its global clinical development programme.
The company operates across both India and the United States and aims to advance its therapies through international regulatory pathways.
As cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, biotechnology companies are increasingly investing in novel immunotherapies capable of offering more targeted and effective treatment options.
The growing success of immune-based therapies has also attracted significant venture capital and institutional investment into oncology-focused biotechnology firms globally.
Indian Biotech Ecosystem Gains Momentum
The fundraising highlights the increasing maturity of India’s biotechnology ecosystem, particularly in high-value research areas such as oncology, precision medicine and advanced therapeutics.
Indian biotech startups are increasingly moving beyond generic pharmaceuticals and biosimilars toward the development of original intellectual property and globally competitive drug discovery platforms.
Analysts believe continued investor support, expanding research capabilities and access to international clinical trial networks could help position India as a significant contributor to the global biotechnology and healthcare innovation landscape.
For Zumutor Biologics, the latest capital infusion is expected to accelerate the development of its lead cancer therapy while strengthening its presence in the global immuno-oncology market.
